It is the policy of Richland Township to relax the prohibition on open burning established
by Ordinance to permit the burning of branches (no more than 3 inches thick in diameter), leaves,
and natural debris from trees an brush twice each year from April 1st to June 15th and from
October 1st to December 15th. The following conditions must be met:
1. Only branches and natural debris from trees and brush can be burned. (No Leaves*)
2. You may not use a flammable liquid to start the fire.
3. The fire must be at least 50 feet away from any buildings, structures, utility telephone or electric poles, trees and property lines.
4. The pile size may not be larger than 6 feet by 6 feet wide and no more that 4 feet high.
5. A garden hose must be present at the fire and be able to reach at least ten feet past the fire site. In lieu of a garden hose, a minimum of four buckets of water must be present.
6. All fire must be extinguished completely by sunset. Fires may not be started prior to sunrise
7. All fires must be constantly attended by an adult until completely extinguished.
8. The fire may only be maintained on a calm day.
9. Any fire maintained in violation of these requirements will be considered as in violation of the ordinance.
For your safety, for the safety of your children, please do not let the children near the fire. As a reminder, Richland Township has a NO BURNING Ordinance. Open burning, including trash barrel burning, is not permitted. The only burning that would be permitted is for the eradication of a public health or safety issue. A permit is required for such eradication.
The Richland Township Fire Marshal is authorized to suspend any burning activity should he deem the suspension necessary to protect property or the public health an welfare of the Township. The Richland Township Fire Marshal is authorized to suspend open burning during anytime that he finds that weather conditions create the potential for dangerous conditions or to protect the public health and welfare of the Township.
* No Leaves may be burned at any time. Leaves must be recycled.
Bagged leaves may be brought to the Township Building and left by the north end of the salt shed.
